Offset Vs Digital Printing: Where Are The Advantages?
by Harris Eisenberg
DIGITAL VS. OFFSET PRINTING: Where are the Advantages?
Hiring a printer can be a daunting task for those new to the experience. There are paper choices, assembly methods, quantity options and discounts--you name it--all standing between you and your finished product. One of the biggest choices, one which will determine if you save money and achieve high quality printing is whether to use offset or digital printing methods. Which one is the best?
Offset printing employs larger presses that use Pantone colors and metal and rubber cylinders, printing the same image, sheet after sheet. Digital printing works much like a large photocopier, using process colors and printing a new image on each sheet of paper over and over. With regard to quality, you'll find that these days, most people agree that digital printing is closing the gap on offset printing. There is a slight but noticeable difference in fine detail quality and the colors of the two technologies will never match each other, but for the most part each looks great on its own.
Besides the obvious differences in processes, the big difference lies in economies of scale -- the ability to take advantage of price discounts from large volume runs. Here's the breakdown: With offset printing, the major component of the price is reserving the actual press to be set up (changing plates, etc.), so the more you cram onto that press while you have reserved it, the better. With digital printing, the first page costs about as much as the last page because the press requires little setup. You may even use print ready material from a CD or file like these for as-needed print resources. So, we are left with this simple fact: for smaller, short-run jobs, digital printing is a bargain and probably your best choice. For larger, high-volume jobs, offset is the way to go.
Use the following pros and cons to help weigh your decision:
Digital Printing
Pros
Quick turnaround times
Great prices for small quantities
Cons
Often cannot be used in an inkjet printer (ink will rub off)
Some limitations for advanced / large-size jobs
Offest Printing
Pros
Versatile enough for the most creative jobs
Pantone color matching is more exact
Cons
Expensive for smaller quantities
Longer timeline for delivery
